The Hunt for the U.S.S. Alligator!
This past weekend, my wife Kendall and I went up to Connecticut to see one of my shipmates, Andy Campbell, from my tour in Cuba. During the daylong visit, we went to the U.S. Navy Submarine base in Groton.
Located right outside the base is the U.S. Navy Submarine Force Museum and home of the U.S.S. Nautilus submarine. The museum is open to the public and is free of charge. If you like submarines and the silent service or just want to learn more, it is a fun time. At the museum as an added feature was a presentation provided by the Navy and Marine Living History Association. Completely decked out in Civil War Naval uniforms, the speakers informed us of an upcoming underwater search for the U.S.S. Alligator. None of us had ever heard of the submarine, but we all became quite interested. Starting this week, the Office of Naval Research and NOAA is beginning a search off of the coast of North Carolina for the 47-foot long submarine...the first U.S. Naval Submarine. Go to the links page and click on the link for the website. A truly amazing story of underwater history in the making – catch the story today!
